First year Early Modern History students took a step back in time this week – to a country ruled by Henry VIII.

The group travelled to Monmouthshire to visit Tintern Abbey; dissolved by the King in 1536 during the Dissolution of the Monasteries. Now a shell with many stories to tell, the group were lucky enough to have a guided tour by a re-enactor Cistercian Monk called Brother Thomas. The students learnt about life as a Cistercian Monk, the role of the monastery in the local community, the reasons for its dissolution and the impact the loss of the abbey had on those people who depended on it.
