We cannot express how proud we are of our Performing Arts Level 3 BTEC Diploma students who last week delivered an amazing piece of theatre that they had devised for their Community Theatre course unit.

The class worked collaboratively to create the plot, characters, script and choreography for a play about a group of scientists that lose Professor Wagner’s intelligence potion - but they didn’t stop there! Our students included sections of the play where the audience has to take part in order to find the missing potion. Participatory theatre is a form of theatre in which the audience interacts with the performers and we were extremely lucky to be joined by a class of Year 3 pupils from Broomhill Junior School who were an excellent audience that got stuck into all the clue-finding activities and dances.

The performance began with an introduction to the characters, the lab and the intelligence potion and how it was invented. This was followed by the cast performing the Periodic Table song and dance. Its catchy rhythm and dance moves were thoroughly enjoyed by the young audience and they were soon wiggling along.

The cast then split the audience into two groups. Group 1 had to head to the Professor’s library to discover the whereabouts of a mysterious briefcase, whilst Group 2 carried out a paper and invisible ink experiment in order to find the code that would open the briefcase. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed this part of the play, as the children were so excited when they discovered the invisible ink that was plastered on the stage walls using the special torches they had found.

The two groups regrouped to discuss their findings and the class shouted the code they found which opened the mysterious briefcase. Inside the briefcase the cast uncovered clues about the person who had stolen the intelligence potion. They found a tie, a lanyard and a World’s Best Teacher certificate. The Year 3 class began to shout out who they thought stole the potion - their teacher Mr Perret!

The St Brendan’s cast then welcomed the Broomhill Junior School Year 3 teacher Mr Perret onto the stage, and he explained that he had stolen the intelligence potion because he thinks he has the smartest class in the world who don’t need such a potion. The class were elated that their teacher had stolen the potion for a good reason. The performance ended with the cast teaching the students the periodic table song and dance moves.

Our Performing Arts course leaders thanked our visitors for being such excellent investigators who worked so well as a team to find the missing potion. The class were rewarded with individual World’s Best Student certificates.

We’d like to thank the staff at Broomhill Junior School for bringing the Year 3 class to our performance. We thoroughly enjoyed the morning and hope that there will be plenty of opportunities in the future to work together again.
