Bristol’s biggest awards celebrating the work and achievements of young people across the city have recognised a St Brendan’s student for her dedication to supporting local charities and enterprising approach to aiding those further afield.

Shelena Artman, who earlier this year was awarded the Good Samaritan of the year award at St Brendan’s Sixth Form College, has been shortlisted in the Enterprise Hero category of the 2021 Bristol Young Hero Awards.

The Bristol Young Hero Awards aim to celebrate young people, aged between 11-19, who have overcome difficult circumstances, made a difference to the lives of others, or achieved something extraordinary. The Enterprise Hero category looks to shine a light on an outstanding young person who has identified a need and found an enterprising approach to fill it.

Earlier this year, Shelena was presented with the Good Samaritan Award in recognition of her tireless work supporting local charities as well as her outstanding approach to being a St Brendan’s student. She is pictures here receiving her award from Marian Curran (St Brendan's Principal) and Sister Margaret Harlock (St Brendan's Governor).

Alongside studying for her three A-levels, Shelena also raised awareness about the plight of the inhabitants of Saint Vincent, the homeland of her father, which was devastated in April this year following volcanic eruptions. Her enterprising approach to this cause have seen her her organising donations of sleeping bags, medical supplies, and toiletry products to send to help evacuees on the island.

This dedication to raising awareness and searching for different ways to provide support are at the heart of Shelena’s values and her enterprising nature:

“It’s such a great honour to be nominated for the Bristol Young Hero Awards. It’s been a challenging year for people all over the world with the pandemic, which makes it even more important to help the communities and charities that are most in need of support.”

“I hope that young people in the area can see what others have achieved and be inspired to use their voices and actions to help make the world a better place.”

The Bristol Young Hero Awards ceremony will take place on 1st October 2021, with a special gala awards night for the young people and their family and friends to enjoy and celebrate.
