Scott Tancock, a former St Brendan’s student who is now in his 3rd year at Bristol University studying Computer Science and Electronics, recently came and delivered an interesting and motivating talk on Supercomputers to current students.
Scott Tancock
Scott described past examples of supercomputers, the challenge of Moore’s law and how multicores have helped overcome problems with power limits. He then went on to cover elements of high performance and parallel processing, on which he provided interesting detail on how to optimise any computer exploiting parallelism and how a programmer can use serial optimisation, memory optimisation and latency hiding. Scott provided the computing students with a very detailed, technical and interesting talk that also looked at career progression and the relevance of A-level studies.
