These practical, work-related courses are designed for students who wish to gain a broad range of knowledge about dynamic business environments. Students must be prepared to work independently and to deadlines.

Course Content

The four-unit Extended Certificate course is studied over two years and is the equivalent of one A-level.

The qualifications provide an opportunity to study the key areas of business and to apply these to selected organisations.

All students will study the following core units:

  • Exploring Business
  • Developing a Marketing Campaign
  • Personal & Business finance
  • Recruitment and Selection

Methods of Teaching and Learning

Well-qualified and experienced staff, with business backgrounds, teach the courses. You will learn through case studies, group work and presentations, before completing assignments that are based on realistic workplace situations.

The courses include a number of visits to local businesses. Guest speakers may be invited to explain how concepts studied in lessons are actually applied in the business environment. All students are encouraged to apply to take part in the Careers ready programme.

Method of Assessment

The courses will be assessed through a mixture of internally assessed assignments and externally assessed units. External assessment will be set and marked by the exam board. There will be two opportunities for students to take the external assessments. An overall grade of pass, merit, distinction or distinction star is then awarded.

Resources

The College has excellent IT facilities, internet, textbooks, case studies, business documents and links with real businesses.

Progression

Qualifications are valued by employers and higher education. The BTEC Level 3 qualifications attract the same UCAS points as A-levels. A business qualification could also support you when applying for jobs in business related careers such as accounting, administration, customer service, finance, IT, human resource management, marketing or sales.

Additional Costs

During the course students are charged for printing and there are also costs incurred when privately buying reliable storage devices to back up their electronic files. In addition, a number of trips may be arranged which will require students to make a contribution towards costs.

Bursary support is available.
