This one-year course is designed to make sure you revise and master all the key topics and skills you need, to give you the best chance to improve your grade and pass your exam. We want you to feel confident and at the same time to enjoy yourself! That's why we use a mixture of games and active learning activities, which involve working in groups in a lot of different ways and with many different resources!

Of course we must not forget our solid routines, which involve the skills checks activities and a lot of practice on exam questions. You will revisit a lot of topics, starting from fractions, decimals and percentages and ending up looking at how algebra fits with 2D or even 3D shapes!

At the same time, we will be sure to remind you that maths can be applied everywhere in real life; that’s why between November and January there will be an increased focus on the applications of maths as well as the chance to gain an Open University accredited course in money management. And while you do all of this, we will always support you and keep an eye on your well-being. Happy students are successful students!

Course Content

The College offers a one-year GCSE course, with some students having the opportunity to re-sit exams in November.

The assessment consists of three papers, all three covering all aspects of the syllabus:

  • Paper 1: Non-calculator paper, 1 hour 30 minutes.
  • Paper 2: Calculator paper, 1 hour 30 minutes.
  • Paper 3: Calculator paper, 1 hour 30 minutes

Methods of Teaching and Learning

The course is taught by well qualified and experienced staff. Teaching methods mostly involve whole-class teaching, with discussions and group work. Students are expected to do a substantial amount of revision and practice outside the classroom.

Methods of Assessment

This course is assessed by written examinations in November or May/June.

Throughout the course, the progress of each student is assessed and monitored by regular assignments and mock examinations.

Resources

The College is well stocked with Mathematics textbooks, and students are encouraged to use IT resources as appropriate. Students are expected to provide their own scientific calculators and geometry sets.

There could be an optional cost for a GCSE exam workbook (£ 5.00 - £7.00 maximum), for the students who wish to have one.

Progression

Students are expected to improve at least one grade. A grade 4/5 opens up opportunities for students (e.g. university, employment, progression to level 3 courses) that may otherwise be closed.
