At the College we have a wide range of exciting programmes for our students to join, one of which is the Inspiring Engineers; open to all students with a passion for engineering.
To support their interest in this field, showcase what a future in this industry looks like and how to get there, we’ve partnered with Mott MacDonald to provide a mentor scheme for our students.
To launch the programme to our group of engineering enthusiasts we were visited by Megan, Taylor and Matt from Mott MacDonald.
Mott MacDonald is a global engineering, management and development consultancy. They work in 140 countries across sectors such as built environment, transport and energy. Each mentor spoke through their own journey from studying to landing their role at the company, providing our students with example pathways they could pursue after College.
To launch the scheme, Megan set the project brief: plan and design the rebuild of an island town that has been destroyed by a natural disaster. Soon our students will be put into groups based on their interests; topics include sustainability, bridges and heavy machinery. They will then begin the period of research and design working together with their team, supported by their mentors, to solve the brief by writing reports and building prototypes.
The project will involve weekly sessions and span 5-6 months, with our budding engineers working towards the final presentation on site at Mott MacDonald for the Celebration Day. In this presentation, our students will get the opportunity to exhibit their solutions to industry experts and reflect on their achievements.
As well as getting the freedom to explore the wide variety of sectors within the engineering world, our students will develop skills such as team work, problem solving and presenting by taking part in this programme. Completion of this project can be used to support UCAS applications and our students will also get the opportunity to apply for an apprenticeship with Mott MacDonald.
We can’t wait to see how our Inspiring Engineers rescue and rebuild the island town, and follow their future in this industry!
